Background: Small mammals serve as the main reservoir for Bartonella and as a proxy indicator of the potential risk of Bartonella transmission from nature to humans. They offer a valuable early warning for human infection. Nevertheless, geographical variations in the impact of the host on the occurrence of Bartonella infection are underestimated. This study was designed to investigate the infection characteristics of Bartonella and explore its species diversity in wild small mammals in western Yunnan Province, China. Methods: Wild small mammals were captured from Yulong, Jianchuan, and Lianghe counties in western Yunnan Province between 2015 and 2016. Real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) was used to detect Bartonella infection, and the Bartonella species were identified by phylogenetic analysis. The factors associated with Bartonella infection in small mammals were analyzed by the Chi-square Test. Results: The prevalence of Bartonella in small mammals was 47.85% (768/1605). Lianghe County had the highest Bartonella infection rate, with 56.27% of the samples tested positive, followed by a rate of 50.91% was tested in Yulong County, and 39.97% in Jianchuan County (p < 0.001). Bartonella was detected positive in a total 25 small mammal species, with infection rates ranging from 2.17% to 100%. Niviventer fulvescens had the highest Bartonella infection rate. In comparison with the dominant small mammal species, Eothenomys mileyus had the lowest Bartonella infection rate than that in Apodemus chevrieri, Rattus tanezumi, and Apodemus draco (p < 0.001). Male small mammals had a higher infection rate than females (p < 0.05). The prevalence of Bartonella in small mammals during the summer season was higher compared to the other three seasons (p < 0.001). Woodland landscape had the highest Bartonella infection rate (p < 0.001). Bartonella rochalimae, B. japonica, B. tribocorum, B. washoensis, B. sylvatica, and B. rattimassiliensis were obtained from infected small mammals. Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of Bartonella was detected with various Bartonella species in small mammals in Yulong, Jianchuan, and Lianghe counties of western Yunnan Province. These findings hold significant scientific clues, providing valuable reference points for further research of Bartonella natural foci in Yunnan or other analogues environments.

BACKGROUND: Gut microbiota plays a significant role in the colorectal cancer (CRC) process. Ectopic colonization of multiple oral bacteria is reportedly associated with CRC pathogenesis and progression, but the details remain unclear. METHODS: We enrolled a cohort of 50 CRC patients and 52 healthy controls from an East China population. Taxonomic and functional analysis of the fecal microbiota were performed using 16S rDNA (50 + 52 samples) and shotgun metagenomic sequencing (8 + 6 samples), respectively, with particular attention paid to gut-colonized oral bacteria. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The results showed more detected bacterial species but lower species evenness within the samples from CRC patients. To determine the specific bacteria enriched in each group, we analyzed their possible protective, carcinogenic, or opportunistic roles in the CRC process. Among the ectopic oral bacteria, we observed a significant increase in the abundance of Fusobacterium and decreased abundance of Prevotella and Ruminococcus in the CRC group. Main differences in the functional composition of these two groups were related to energy metabolism and biosynthesis, especially the glycolytic pathway. Furthermore, we validated the colonization of Fusobacterium nucleatum subsp. animalis within CRC tissues and studied its impact on the host intestinal epithelium and tumor cells. With high selectivity for cancerous tissues, this subspecies promoted CRC cell proliferation and induced potential DNA damage.

The identification of heavy metal sources in farmland soils is essential for the rational health condition management and sustainable development of soil. Using source resolution results(source component spectrum and source contribution)of a positive matrix factorization(PMF)model, historical survey data, and time-series remote sensing data, integrating a geodetector(GD), an optimal parameters-based geographical detector(OPGD), a spatial association detector(SPADE), and an interactive detector for spatial associations(IDSA)model, this study explored the modifiable areal unit problem(MAUP) of spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources and identified the driving factors and their interacting effects on the spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources in categorical and continuous variables, respectively. The results showed that the spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources at small and medium scales was affected by the spatial scale, and the optional spatial unit was 0.08 km2 for detecting spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources in the study region. Considering spatial correlation and discretization level, the combination of the quantile method and discretization parameters with an interruption number of 10 could be implied to reduce the partitioning effects on continuous variables in the detection of spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources. Within categorical variables, strata(PD 0.12-0.48) controlled the spatial heterogeneity of soil heavy metal sources, the interaction between strata and watersheds explained 27.28%-60.61% of each source, and the high-risk areas of each source were distributed in the lower sinian system, upper cretaceous in strata, mining land in land use, and haplic acrisols in soil types. Within continuous variables, population (PSD 0.40-0.82) controlled the spatial variation in soil heavy metal sources, and the explanatory power of spatial combinations of continuous variables for each source ranged from 61.77% to 78.46%. The high-risk areas of each source were distributed in evapotranspiration (41.2-43 kg·m-2), distance from the river (315-398 m), enhanced vegetation index (0.796-0.995), and distance from the river (499-605 m). The results of this study provide a reference for the research of the drivers of heavy metal sources and their interactions in arable soils and provide an important scientific basis for the management of arable soil and its sustainable development in karst areas.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) patients are critically ill and have low immunity. They will undergo various trauma medical procedures during diagnosis and treatment. The use of high-dose hormones and broad-spectrum antibiotics will increase the incidence of nosocomial infection in ICU patients. Therefore, it is necessary to explore the causes of nosocomial infection in ICU and provide basis for the prevention and control of nosocomial infection in ICU. AIM: To explore major pathogens of nosocomial infection in ICUs, methods of detection and drug resistance trends. METHODS: Risk factors of multidrug-resistant infection were analyzed to provide a basis for clinical rational use of antimicrobial drugs in the ICU. These findings were used to standardize rational use of antimicrobial agents. BD PhoenixTM100 automatic bacterial identification analyzer was used to for cell identification in specimens collected from the ICU between January 2016 and December 2019. Drug sensitivity tests were carried out and drug resistance trends were analyzed using the optical disc diffusion method. Odds ratios and corresponding 95%CI of independent variables were calculated using a logistic regression model. Backward elimination (trend = 0.1) was used as an inclusion criterion for multivariate analysis. All data were analyzed using SPSS version 22.0, and P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: We collected 2070 samples from ICU patients between January 2016 and December 2019. Sample types comprised sputum (1139 strains, 55.02%), blood (521 strains, 25.17%), and drainage fluid (117 strains, 5.65%). A total of 1051 strains of major pathogens, including Acinetobacter baumannii, Escherichia coli (E. coli), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) and Staphylococcus aureus, were detected, with a detection rate of 35.97% (378/1051). Most of these strains were resistant to antibiotics. Detection rate of E. coli was 21.79% (229/1051), and it was generally sensitive to many antimicrobial drugs. Detection rate of P. aeruginosa was 24.74% (260/1051), and showed low sensitivity to most antibiotics. Detection rate of K. pneumoniae was 9.42% (99/1051), which was generally resistant to multiple antimicrobial drugs and resistant forms. K. pneumoniae was resistant to imipenem for approximate 4 years, and showed a 19.9% (19/99) and 20.20% (20/99) rate of meropenem resistance. Logistic analysis showed that mechanical ventilation and ureteral intubation were risk factors for multidrug-resistant bacterial infections. CONCLUSION: This study showed a high incidence of ICU infections. Mechanical ventilation and urine tube intubation were risk factors for infection with multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Among various genera of free-living amoebae prevalent in nature, some members are identified as causative agents of human encephalitis, in which Naegleria fowleri followed by Acanthamoeba spp. and Balamuthia mandrillaris have been successively discovered. As the three dominant genera responsible for infections, Acanthamoeba and Balamuthia work as opportunistic pathogens of granulomatous amoebic encephalitis in immunocompetent and immunocompromised individuals, whereas Naegleria induces primary amoebic meningoencephalitis mostly in healthy children and young adults as a more violent and deadly disease. Due to the lack of typical symptoms and laboratory findings, all these amoebic encephalitic diseases are difficult to diagnose. Considering that subsequent therapies are also affected, all these brain infections cause significant mortality worldwide, with more than 90% of the cases being fatal. Along with global warming and population explosion, expanding areas of human and amoebae activity in some regions lead to increased contact, resulting in more serious infections and drawing increased public attention. In this review, we summarize the present information of these pathogenic free-living amoebae, including their phylogeny, classification, biology, and ecology. The mechanisms of pathogenesis, immunology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapies are also discussed.

Purpose: Angiogenesis post-ischemia plays an essential role in preventing ischemic damage to tissue by improving the blood recovery. Determining the regulatory mechanism of ischemic angiogenesis, therefore, could provide effective therapeutics for ischemic injury. Materials and Methods: The RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) database was used to predict the association of gamma-aminobutyric acid type B receptor subunit 2 (GABBR2) with endothelial-specific expression. The role of GABBR2 in angiogenesis was verified in vitro by downregulating GABBR2 in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) with lentiviral vectors. Besides, the in vivo effect of GABBR2 on the blood recovery of an ischemic hindlimb was demonstrated by establishing a hindlimb ischemia model in normal and GABBR2 adenoviral vector-infected mice. Then, the mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) in peripheral blood post-ischemia was determined by flow cytometry. Finally, the XF analyzer and Western blot were used to determine the effect of GABBR2 on endothelial metabolism. Results: The RNA-seq results indicated a strong association between GABBR2 and endothelial revascularization, and the upregulation of GABBR2 was detected in both hypoxia-treated HUVECs and ischemic mouse hindlimb. Hypoxia treatment for 6 h increased the proliferation, migration, and tube formation of HUVECs, which were inhibited by GABBR2 knockdown. Additionally, GABBR2 downregulation significantly decreased the blood flow recovery of mouse ischemic hindlimb. The expressions of the EPC markers CD34+ and CD133+ significantly decreased in the peripheral blood in hindlimb post-ischemia. Mechanically, glycolysis-dominated metabolism of HUVECs was compromised by GABBR2 knockdown. Evidences of the decreased expressions of HKII, PFKFB3, and PKM1 also supported the compromised glycolysis induced by GABBR2 downregulation. Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that GABBR2 regulated angiogenesis post-ischemia by inhibiting the glycolysis pathway.

INTRODUCTION: Myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a group of heterogeneous bone marrow clonal diseases characterized by the abnormal differentiation and development of bone marrow cells. Src homology region 2 domain-containing phosphatase (SHP)-1 is an important tumor suppressor gene that regulates the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) pathway. METHODS: Survival analysis was performed to evaluate the function of decitabine (5-Aza) in treating MDS patients with and without SHP-1 methylation. The effects of 5-Aza treatment on SHP-1 expression and methylation and STAT3 phosphorylation were investigated in MDS cells by methylation-specific PCR, reverse transcription PCR, and western blotting. Cell viability and apoptosis were similarly evaluated by MTT assay and flow cytometry. RESULTS: High-risk MDS patients showed significant SHP-1 hypermethylation compared with low-risk patients, and patients with no SHP-1 methylation had longer overall survival. SHP-1 expression was significantly increased at mRNA and protein levels following 5-Aza treatment, while the phosphorylation of STAT3 protein was significantly decreased. Apoptosis increased significantly in MDS cells treated with higher doses of 5-Aza while cell viability decreased significantly. CONCLUSION: SHP-1 hypermethylation was associated with poor prognosis in HR patients with MDS, suggesting it could be used as a prognostic indicator.

OBJECTIVE: May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) is typically characterized by compression of the left common iliac vein by the overlying right common iliac artery. The present study evaluated the occurrence of atypical imaging features of MTS using three-dimensional computed tomography venography reconstruction (3D-CTV) and analyzed their correlation with clinical features. METHODS: We analyzed the data from 268 patients with left lower extremity chronic venous disease (CVD) using 3D-CTV at a single institution from January to June 2019. An area stenosis percentage >50% was defined as significant venous compression. Of the 268 patients, 92 had at least one significant iliac and/or vena cava compression confirmed by 3D-CTV. Of the 92 patients, 89 underwent digital subtraction venography via the left common femoral vein, and the outcomes were compared with their 3D-CTV findings. Different types of venous compression were evaluated using 3D-CTV. The relationship among compression type, sex, age, and CVD symptoms was evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 106 venous compression sites were found in 92 patients. Atypical compression included inferior vena cava (IVC) compression and partial IVC compression (8.5% and 55.7%, respectively). Multiple compression sites were present in 13 patients (14.1%). The compression sites correlated significantly with clinical symptoms (P = .017) and were related to sex (P = .001). The number of patients with IVC and partial IVC compression but false-negative venography findings was four (33.3%) and six (50%), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: 3D-CTV facilitates the detection of atypical venous compression in patients with MTS with notable chronic symptoms. Patients with multiple compression sites had more severe clinical symptoms and greater false-negative rates with venography. IVC compression was more likely to occur in female patients with MTS.

BACKGROUND: The prognostic value of pre-treatment platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in patients with urothelial carcinoma (UC) remains controversial. Therefore, this meta-analysis aimed to identify the prognostic impact of PLR on UC. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched. Hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to summarize the correlations between PLR and overall survival (OS), progression-free survival (PFS), disease-free survival (DFS), and cancer-specific survival (CSS). Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs were used to measure the association between PLR and tumor clinicopathological factors. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 15 studies published from 2015 to 2019 with a total of 5354 patients. Overall, a high PLR was correlated to poorer PFS (HR = 1.81, 95% CI 1.28-2.56, p = 0.001) and DFS (HR = 1.09, 95% CI 1.31-2.16, p < 0.001) but not poor OS (HR = 1.23, 95% CI 0.95-1.59, p = 0.124) or CSS (HR = 1.000, 95% CI 0.998-1.002, p = 0.919) in UC. In addition, an elevated PLR was correlated with patient age > 65 years (OR = 1.72, 95% CI 1.25-2.38, p = 0.001) and hypertension (OR = 1.48, 95% CI 1.01-2.18, p = 0.046). However, no significant association was observed between PLR and sex (OR = 0.79, 95% CI 0.56-1.14, p = 0.206) or diabetes (OR = 1.29, 95% CI 0.77-2.15, p = 0.333). CONCLUSIONS: Our results demonstrated a significant correlation between elevated PLR and poor prognosis in UC. The prognostic role of PLR may help guide the management and prognostication of UC patients.

It is usually very difficult to measure the intrinsic thermal conductivity of fibers using direct electrical heating method, due to the presence of lateral heat loss. In this study, we demonstrate that the intrinsic thermal conductivity and lateral heat transfer coefficient of fibers can be extracted simultaneously via multiple measurements on the same fiber. In our experiments, three samples of various lengths were prepared from an individual polyacrylonitrile-based carbon fiber of 5.6 µm in diameter and measured with the direct electrical heating method. From each sample, we can get a curve of thermal conductivity vs lateral heat transfer coefficient. We showed that the intrinsic thermal conductivity and lateral heat transfer coefficient can be extracted from the intersection of these curves. Our results also showed that ignoring the lateral heat loss can result in an overestimation in thermal conductivity of carbon fibers by more than 3 times.

In this work, we use commercial powder particulates (a cosmetic fixing powder) as triboelectric materials for constructing a triboelectric nanogenerator (CFP-TENG). Through finger pressing, the CFP-TENG generated approximate open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power density values of 1141 V, 521 µA, and 570.96 µW/cm2, respectively. Thirty-seven commercial blue LEDs can be easily lit up by the CFP-TENG. Moreover, this TENG, which was designed as a novel palette structure for harvesting mechanical energy from bicycle motion, serves as a self-powered bicycle speed sensor. In addition, the cosmetic fixing powder can be used as an effective material to enhance the triboelectric property of skin. This study provides an effective method for developing a cost-effective TENG without the use of complex surface micro-/nano-texturing.

Recent years, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted increased attention from researchers worldwide. Owing to their conductivity and triboelectric characteristics, metal materials can be made as both triboelectric materials and conductive electrodes. However, the surface of typical metals (such as copper, aluminum, and iron) is likely to be corroded when the sweat generated by human-body movement drops on the surface of TENGs, as this corrosion is detrimental to the output performance of TENGs. In this work, we proposed a novel corrosion-resistant copper-nickel based TENG (CN-TENG). Copper-nickel alloy conductive tape and polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tape played the role of the triboelectric materials, and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) was utilized as the supporting part. The conductive copper-nickel alloy tape also served as a conductive electrode. The open-circuit voltage (VOC) and short-circuit current (ISC) can arrive at 196.8 V and 6 µA, respectively. Furthermore, peak power density values of 45 µW/cm2 were realized for the CN-TENG. A series of experiments confirmed its corrosion-resistant property. The approximate value of VOC for the fabricated TENG integrated into the shoe reached 1500 V, which is capable of driving at least 172 high-power LEDs in series. The results of this research provide a workable method for supporting corrosion-resistant self-powered wearable electronics.

A disposable and ecofriendly starch paper was used to fabricate a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) for the sensing of human perspiration. Using cost-effective and commercially accessible materials, the starch paper-based TENG (S-TENG) can be achieved through a rapid and simple fabrication method. The output performance varies with the absorbed water content, which can be utilized for human perspiration sensing. The starch structure can be broken down in water within 4 min. The proposed S-TENGs have a considerable potential in the field of green wearable electronics.

Unlike large-scale and expensive synchrotron radiation facilities, the Thomson scattering X-ray source can provide quasi-monochromatic, energy-tunable and high-brightness X-ray pulses with a small footprint and moderate cost, making it an excellent candidate for dual-energy and multi-energy imaging at laboratories and hospitals. Here, the first feasibility study on dual-energy computed tomography (CT) based on this type of light source is reported, and the effective atomic number and electron-density distribution of a standard phantom consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, water and aluminium is derived. The experiment was carried out at the Tsinghua Thomson scattering X-ray source with peak energies of 29 keV and 68 keV. Both the reconstructed effective atomic numbers and the retrieved electron densities of the three materials were compared with their theoretical values. It was found that these values were in agreement by 0.68% and 2.60% on average for effective atomic number and electron density, respectively. These results have verified the feasibility of dual-energy CT based on the Thomson scattering X-ray source and will further expand the scope of X-ray imaging using this type of light source.

The aim of this study was to explore the clinical value of ultrasonic monitoring in the assessment of pulmonary recruitment and the best positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP).Between January 2015 and June 2017, 40 patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome in our hospital were randomly divided into 2 groups: ultrasound group (ULS group; n = 20) and oxygenation group (OXY group; n = 20). The PEEP incremental method was used to perform recruitment maneuvers. Ultrasound scoring and the oxygenation method were used to evaluate the pulmonary recruitment endpoint. The best PEEP was chosen by ultrasound scoring and the oxygenation method after achieving the pulmonary recruitment endpoint and sustaining it for 15 minutes.The oxygenation index, PEEP, peak airway pressure (Ppeak), mean airway pressure (Pmean), and dynamic compliance (Cdyn) in the OXY group were significantly lower than those in the ULS group (P < .05) at the pulmonary recruitment endpoint; however, there was no statistical significance in the mean arterial blood pressure (MAP) or heart rate (HR) (P > .05). The best PEEPs in the OXY and ULS groups were 13.1 ±â€Š3.1 and 15.7 ±â€Š4.2 cmH2O, respectively, with a significant difference between the 2 groups (t = 2.227, P = .016). Compared with the basal state, the Cdyn, oxygenation index, Pmean, and Ppeak in both groups significantly increased after pulmonary recruitment (P < .05). Furthermore, the Cdyn and oxygenation index in the ULS group were significantly higher than those in the OXY group after pulmonary recruitment (P < .05). The HR in both groups significantly increased, and the MAP significantly decreased. Two hours after recruitment, the HR and MAP returned to near basal levels without a significant difference between the 2 groups (P > .05).Lung ultrasound can be used to detect the endpoint of lung recruitment and the best PEEP, with good effects on lung compliance and oxygenation improvement.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis causes nutritional substrate malabsorption; hence, preventing gut barrier problems and improving the nutritional status in sepsis is a compelling issue. AIMS: We tested whether ghrelin administration affects peptide transporter 1 (PepT1) activity in the intestinal epithelium of rats with sepsis. METHODS: Sixty male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into sham-operated, sepsis, and ghrelin-treated groups. The cecum of sham-operated rats was separated after laparotomy without ligation and perforation. Sepsis group rats underwent cecal ligation and puncture (CLP). Mucosal specimens were used for immunohistochemstry, real-time PCR, and western blotting to detect PepT1 distribution, and mRNA and protein expression levels, respectively. TNF-α, IL-1ß, and ghrelin levels were estimated in serum and intestinal mucosal tissue by ELISA. High-performance liquid chromatography was used to measure PepT1 uptake by the epithelial cells. Moreover, survival, body weight, and food intake of the rats were recorded during the 7-day treatment period. RESULTS: All rats in the sham-operated group survived, and 80% of rats in the sepsis group died within 7d of CLP. Treatment with ghrelin attenuated the CLP-induced body weight loss, intestine mucosa damage, and the survival rate was better. In addition, ghrelin attenuated increases in TNF-α and IL-1ß production. The expressions of PepT1 mRNA and protein were higher in ghrelin-treated group rats than in sepsis rats. Moreover, the uptake function of PepT1 was better in ghrelin-treated group rats. CONCLUSION: Ghrelin treatment can reduce the inflammatory response and greatly upregulate the physiological function of PepT1 in intestinal epithelial cells of rats with sepsis.

Nanomaterials serve as promising candidates for strain sensing due to unique electromechanical properties by appropriately assembling and tailoring their configurations. Through the crisscross interlacing of graphene microribbons in an over-and-under fashion, the obtained graphene woven fabric (GWF) indicates a good trade-off between sensitivity and stretchability compared with those in previous studies. In this work, the function of woven fabrics for highly sensitive strain sensing is investigated, although network configuration is always a strategy to retain resistance stability. The experimental and simulation results indicate that the ultrahigh mechanosensitivity with gauge factors of 500 under 2% strain is attributed to the macro-woven-fabric geometrical conformation of graphene, which induces a large interfacial resistance between the interlaced ribbons and the formation of microscale-controllable, locally oriented zigzag cracks near the crossover location, both of which have a synergistic effect on improving sensitivity. Meanwhile, the stretchability of the GWF could be tailored to as high as over 40% strain by adjusting graphene growth parameters and adopting oblique angle direction stretching simultaneously. We also demonstrate that sensors based on GWFs are applicable to human motion detection, sound signal acquisition, and spatially resolved monitoring of external stress distribution.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: PepT1 can transport bacterial oligopeptide products and induce intestinal inflammation. Our aim was to investigate the mechanism of the small intestine injury induced by bacterial oligopeptide product muramyl dipeptide (MDP) which is transported by PepT1. METHODS: We perfused the jejunum with a solution with or without MDP, or with a solution of MDP + Gly-Gly and explored the degree of inflammation to determine the role of PepT1-Nod2 signaling pathway in small intestine mucosa. RESULTS: MDP perfusion induced inflammatory cell accumulation and intestinal damage, accompanied by an increase in mucosal Nod2 and Rip2 transcript expression. NFκB activity and inflammatory cytokine expression, including serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6, increased in the MDP group compared to the controls; these effects were reversed by perfusion of the nutritional dipeptide Gly-Gly. CONCLUSION: MDP can be transported through PepT1, causing inflammatory damage in the rat small intestine. Nod2-Rip2-NFκB signaling involved in the small intestinal inflammatory injury caused by MDP which is transported through PepT1.

Herein, we proposed a portable, easy-to-operate, and antifouling microcapsule array chip for target detection. This prepackaged chip was fabricated by innovative and cost-effective 3D ice printing integrating with photopolymerization sealing which could eliminate complicated preparation of wet chemistry and effectively resist outside contaminants. Only a small volume of sample (2 µL for each microcapsule) was consumed to fulfill the assay. All the reagents required for the analysis were stored in ice form within the microcapsule before use, which guaranteed the long-term stability of microcapsule array chips. Nitrite and glucose were chosen as models for proof of concept to achieve an instant quantitative detection by naked eyes without the need of external sophisticated instruments. The simplicity, low cost, and small sample consumption endowed ice-printing microcapsule array chips with potential commercial value in the fields of on-site environmental monitoring, medical diagnostics, and rapid high-throughput point-of-care quantitative assay.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs) are chronic and involve the gastrointestinal tract; the two primary IBDs are ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. Existing treatments for IBD include control of active inflammation and regulation of immune disorders, and commonly used drugs include salicylates, corticosteroids, and immunosuppressants. At the same time, an in-depth study of IBD pathogenesis promoted the acceptance of bioimmunotherapy by increasing numbers of people. However, long-term use of these drugs can cause adverse reactions that are difficult for patients to overcome, with limited efficacy for critically ill patients. Recent studies have found that stem cell transplantation is a new and effective therapy and IBD treatment, particularly for refractory cases. Stem cells, especially induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), can differentiate into functional intestinal epithelia and their use avoids ethical issues arising from embryonic stem cells, providing a new kind of seed cell for alternative treatments for IBD. This paper reviews iPSCs as a potential new treatment for IBDs in order to provide an experimental and clinical reference.
